“If you could imagine how difficult or hard it is for a same sex attracted or gay teenager to come out to their Christian parents. I was a 16 year old teenager coming out, Christian, to my three gay parents. And they ended up kicking me out of the household.”
Originally from Columbia, MO and Kansas City, MO, Caleb wasn’t raised in a Christian household. He actually grew up thinking that Christians were the “enemy.” After joining a Bible study in high school in hopes to disprove the Bible, he ended up following Jesus.
Caleb went on to study at Ozark Christian College, Talbot School of Theology (Biola University), and is finishing a Doctor of Ministry at Dallas Theological Seminary. He has served at churches in Missouri, Kansas, Texas, and was an associate pastor at Shepherd Church in Porter Ranch, CA for 11 years. He is now the Lead Pastor of Discovery Church in Simi Valley, CA. Caleb is also the author of Messy Grace.
In Messy Grace, Caleb tells his story of being raised in the LGBT community by his parents, accepting Christ, becoming a pastor, and looking at what the Bible has to say about sexual identity. Through biblical teaching, Caleb helps his readers understand how they can love others without sacrificing biblical convictions. In addition, he shows evangelicals how to treat people well and nurture healthy, respectful, and biblically informed relationships with people in the LGBT community.
Pastor Casey Cariker had the opportunity to talk with Caleb about his story, and his book Messy Grace.
